**Warning Minor Spoilers Possible Ahead**The world conspired against me trying to get me to hate this movie, and still I love it. I would even pay the eight dollars to go and see it again. I went out last Wednesday night with a friend, planning to use one of my free movie passes that I have from chaperoning Homecoming this year. When I got there though was disappointed to see that passes were not yet being accepted. Blah. My friend and I both forked over our money and went in. As we were going to our seats I was starting to feel a bit sick to my stomach but I decided not to say anything, especially since the last time I'd gone out with her I had to go home early or risk throwing up.
So, there we were, ready for the movie and I just have to say that it was amazing! The casting was perfect, the plot was perfect, and although it was just a bit preachy and predictable, sometimes that's exactly what you need in a movie.
Frances McDormand is Mrs. Guinevere Pettigrew, a governess living in Pre-WWII Britain who is sacked from her last position as a nanny. After having been refused any more positions by the employment agency she ends up on the street for one night before fighting (and pretending) her way into the position of social secretary for an up-and-coming singer (and actress) Delysia LaFasse (played by Amy Adams) who is juggling three different suitors. All in all, lots of laughs in mistaken identity, mix-ups, and surprise reveals.
The cast is amazing and the acting reflects that. I recognized 90 percent of the actors from my favorite movies. Everything from Enchanted to Persuasion to Bridget Jones' Diary to Harry Potter to Star Dust. Captain Wentworth, I mean, CiarĂ¡n Hinds plays Joe Blumfield the older love interest genuinely without coming off as sacchirine sweet. The three love interests of Delysia are played by Tom Payne as play producer Phil Goldman (one of the only actors I didn't recognize, but brilliant nonetheless), Mark Strong as nightclub owner Nick Colderelli, and Lee Pace as musician Michael Pardue. Well-done, believable, amazing all-round.
The story was predictable, but deliciously so. Although it follows the normal order of things it is always genuine and true to its characters, time period, and setting. It was a fun ride the whole way through. I can't wait until it comes out on DVD.
*Quick caveat and warning: There is one instance of rear male nudity. Think Romeo and Juliet--the Zeffirelli version.
