Good to the Last Drop

The queen refilled her husband's glass with a demure smile, successfully withholding the inner rage and satisfaction. He guffawed, sloshed his drink, and slapped Simon on the back, spilling a majority of the prince's wine. If the king would but drink a bit more, this one last glass, all would be settled, changed, finished.

Glancing back to Simon, she raised an eyebrow, Simon rose his in response, followed by his half-filled glass. “A toast. To the King!”

After a slight hesitation the others followed. “To the king.”

Down the wine went, every last drop.

Dear Miss A,

I have two questions. What is this story from and who wrote it? Can you recommend any resources for teaching vocabulary/spelling? (I had to write some tests last night and it took me *for*ev*er*, so I'm thinking either I need to find Teaching Resources or learn to be a faster question writer.) So I guess that's actually three questions.

Oh, this story is one of the rough drafts I was working on to show my kids what flash fiction was--though this is closer to micro-fiction.

As far as vocabulary and spelling, some of the best ways to teach it are to use books that students are already reading. If that's not an option, then it is a good idea to create words from commonly used root words. (Just look up roots on google and you'll see some examples i.e. http://virtualsalt.com/roots.htm). Other than words, there are different methods out there such as Kate Kinsella, but many of them require you to actually be in a classroom with people.

Questions are always hard to write. If you want a head start, try looking up "lesson plans" or "discussion questions" depending on what you're doing. I have a question generator that someone gave me, but it's written out. Email me your snail mail address and I can send you a copy.

Sorry I didn't answer your email sooner. I was looking up resources and forgot to send you any preliminary answer. I'll keep thinking too. Let me know if you need more info. I'm happy to send anything your way!

Thanks! I'm liking these flash/microfictions of yours (especially the next one). Thanks for the tips. Much appreciated.
